How to digest small and medium size flexible AMOLED capacity?
2019.11.12

At present, major panel manufacturers are actively looking for a sea port for flexible AMOLED production capacity.

Flexible AMOLED has been applied in smart watch and smart bracelet. Currently, apple watch, Samsung smart watch and bracelet, LG smart watch and Nubian wristband mobile phone are all adopting flexible AMOLED. Flexible AMOLED can provide more design space and longer endurance for intelligent wearable devices. In order to further extend the endurance of wearable devices, apple watch series 4 has adopted ltpo OLED.

Wearable devices consume less AMOLED area and contribute less to capacity reduction, but they are more profitable than mobile phones. At present, the penetration rate of rigid AMOLED in wearable device market is gradually increasing. In the future, with the further maturity of flexible AMOLED technology and the continuous expansion of production capacity, more wearable device brands will introduce flexible AMOLED.

Vehicle display is the second largest application in the small and medium size panel market, which is full of imagination space. Although the car delivery volume is not as good as the mobile phone market, each car needs more than ten screens. At present, each car needs two screens on average. However, OLED is flexible, light and easy to design special shapes such as curved surface, fast response time and so on, which is conducive to the feedback of vehicle information, and has a certain space in the future vehicle display market.

In terms of size, the on-board display screen is basically less than 7 inches, and the integrated screen size can be more than 20 inches. The on-board display is conducive to the removal of flexible AMOLED capacity. However, the on-board display requires high reliability, life and other aspects. At present, Samsung, LGD, BOE, vicino, etc. are actively tackling relevant technical problems.

In addition, the traditional IT market has also opened an application window for flexible AMOLED. At present, nearly 90% of laptops use a-Si products, and the rest use oxide, LTPS and OLED. Compared with a-Si, OLED has the advantages of more colorful color, faster response time and lower power consumption. There will be a certain market space in the pen market, especially in the e-competitive notebook market and e-competitive display market.

Flexible AMOLED can also be applied to notebook computers in the folding and curling stages. Lenovo has already exhibited laptops with LGD foldable screens, which are expected to go on sale in 2020. Samsung Electronics is also planning a foldable OLED notebook.

In addition, due to the overcapacity of global flexible AMOLED, it is an important strategy to find more application market directions. Samsung display has developed and designed TFE + glass style mid size panel since 2016, which tends to mass production, or will become the direction of consuming excess flexible capacity.
